Mandatory microchipping of dogs
Dear dog owners,
It is our duty to inform you about the approved amendment to the veterinary law, which, as of January 1, 2020, makes microchipping mandatory for all dog owners. The goal is to tighten the conditions for dog breeding and reduce the existence and operation of puppy mills. Chip registration will also significantly assist in finding the owners of lost dogs and safely returning them to their homes. Microchipping should be done for all dogs in combination with the first rabies vaccination, which is administered from the twelfth week of life and no later than six months of age.
If the breeder does not comply with this obligation and it is discovered, administrative proceedings will be initiated. If the animal is not microchipped, it will not have a valid rabies vaccination. This requirement does not apply to dogs that were identified by tattoo before July 3, 2011. Therefore, check your memory or vaccination records to ensure that your pet is microchipped. If not, make sure to correct this by the end of 2019.
So, what exactly is microchipping? It is a modern method of animal identification using so-called microchips, or radio-frequency identification (RFID). The microchip, which is the size of a grain of rice, is programmed with a unique numerical code that can be read by a special scanner. The application can only be performed by a veterinarian, who uses a needle and applicator to insert the microchip on the left side of the animal’s neck. The microchip lasts for the entire life of the animal. It is completely harmless to the animal and can be applied at any age.
